In 1968, Dr. Albert Pennings pulled impossibly strong threads from a lab beaker. And from that happy accident, Dyneema® was born.

In 1978, Paul Smith and Piet Lemstra developed a process called “gel spinning” that allowed Dyneema® to be produced on an industrial scale. Soon, Han Meijer invented the twin screw extruder, which improved production efficiency enormously.

By 1990, Dyneema® was recognized as the world's strongest fiber™. It began being used in a string of high-performance applications, such as body armor, sailing yarn lines, and mooring systems for ships and oil rigs.

Over time, Dyneema® expanded into new industries like outdoor gear, fencing, cycling, and high-performance apparel. Today, alongside high-quality sailing applications, it is also used in innovative products like motorcycle denim, ultralight backpacks, bullet-resistant armor, and even folding kayaks.
