At a glance
Loops made with Dyneema® are closed rings of spliced rope or cord used as lightweight, high-strength connectors that replace traditional metal hardware.
How loops are used on sailboats:
Soft shackles/ rope shackles
How the loop is used
Replace steel shackles for sheets, halyards, or blocks.
Why Dyneema®
Stronger than steel by weight; will not damage deck gear.
Block attachments
How the loop is used
Used to lash sail corners, traveler cars, or fittings.
Why Dyneema®
No corrosion; low stretch; easy inspection.

In-depth read
Soft shackles/ rope shackles
One of the most popular uses for loops with Dyneema® is to create soft shackles. These replace stainless steel shackles on deck, providing the same breaking strength but weighing much less. They are also less noisy. Soft shackles made from Dyneema® are especially popular for cruising and racing yachts.
Block attachments
Soft loops with Dyneema® are used to secure blocks in rigging systems. They offer a smooth, friction-resistant surface that keeps blocks running freely, optimizing performance in purchase systems and other load-bearing setups.
Lashing points/ strops
Halyard loops:
Loops with Dyneema® can be spliced onto halyards to form attachment points that are incredibly strong and lightweight. Their flexibility makes them ideal for connecting sails without the bulk and weight of traditional metal shackles.
Running backstays and vangs:
Using loops with Dyneema® for running backstays and vang systems saves weight and reduces friction. Being easy to splice, they can be adjusted and customized for different setups, providing an efficient and high-strength solution.
Control systems
Running backstays and vangs: In adjustable rigging systems such as running backstays and vangs, loops with Dyneema® are used where repeated trimming and load changes occur. Their low stretch and high strength allow precise control of rig tension and sail shape, while their flexibility supports smooth adjustment under load.
Backup or emergency rigging
In an emergency, loops with Dyneema® can work as temporary replacements for broken or damaged components. Their high strength and ease of use make them indispensable for on-the-fly repairs.
